Fall Neighborhood Clean Up

This weekend we are having a neighborhood clean-up. Rather than gathering as a group, we are asking that folks work on their own or with friends to pick up roadside trash dumped around their property. Contractor bags will be available on the front porch of 410 Spencer Road. There will also loaner reflective vests and work gloves available. Please sign them out on the sheet on the table and sign them back in when you return them.

Please only include road-side trash, not household garbage.

The collected trash will be picked up by the city on Monday, November 13 from 411 Spencer Road, across the street from where you will be returning any borrowed equipment. Look for the sign by the street side wall to know where to leave your collected trash.

Upcoming Meeting

Join us at our upcoming neighborhood meeting on Sunday, Oct 29th at 11am at the Community Room at TCAction (701 Spencer Rd.). To get to the meeting room, you will need to go in the back entrance. Go up the driveway on the right before you reach the main building. There is parking in the rear if you will be driving. The entrance is on the parking lot side.

We will be joined by our two common council members, George McGonigal and Cynthia Brock, as well as a representative from the IPD. This is a chance to meet our neighbors, to share our concerns, to learn about more traffic and public safety issues, and to plan any future activities.

Coffee and some light refreshments will be available. However, because we only have the use of the community room, there will not be any childcare.

We look forward to seeing our neighbors there!

Another Successful Clean Up!

Thank you for all the neighbors who came out today to help with our neighborhood clean up. There was a great turn out!

A special thank you to neighbors Jean and Claudia who coordinated the event.

Spring Clean Up 2022!

Please join us on Saturday, May 14th at 10 A.M. (rain date: Sunday, May 15th at 10 A.M.) to pick up trash along our neighborhood streets and sidewalks.

Trash bags will be available at 410 Spencer Road for use. Filled bags can be dropped off in the 400 block at the sign posted. Please collect only road-side debris; don’t include your household trash or garbage.

Come join your neighbors as we work to make this a better community for us all!

Another Successful Neighborhood Clean-Up

Ithaca Police Department members assisting with clean up

Many thanks to all those who helped with the clean-up of our neighborhood last weekend. Because of our work, our community looks better than it has since before the pandemic started. As things return to normal, we will again plan on having our clean-up events twice a year in the hope that we can maintain the progress we made today.

Special thanks are due to the members of the Ithaca Police Department who helped out last Saturday, many after working the night shift. Your efforts in gathering and hauling away two years’ work of debris were much appreciated!

Thanks also to our Common Council representatives, George McGonigal and Cynthia Brock. Your trash collection skills and continuing support of our neighborhood mean a lot.

For those who were unable to participate, you will have another chance in the Fall. We will hope to see you then.

Community Conversation on Recent Gun Activity

There have been some recent gun-related incidents on Spencer Road, including two instances of a gun found along the road, and three reports in the last few months of gunshots being fired. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported in any of these instances.

In response to concerns about the increasing frequency of gun-related activity, the Spencer Road Neighborhood Association will be holding an online neighborhood meeting on Zoom at 7:00pm on Thursday, May 6th. We have invited our neighborhood’s common council representatives, a representative from the Ithaca Police Department, and other members of the community to join the conversation to discuss our concerns and share strategies about how we can move forward as a neighborhood community, including precautions we can take to reduce these incidents and ensure the safety of our neighbors.

We hope you will join us in this conversation. Please register for the meeting. When you register, you will receive an email with instructions on how to join the Zoom session on the 6th, either online or by phone. If you have questions about how to join, please email us at SpencerRoadIthaca@gmail.com.

Neighborhood Clean-Up: May 15th

In the past, we would do our neighborhood clean up in small groups, but due to social distancing, this year’s clean up will be done as an “on your own” event on May 15th. Please gather any street, curb, and ditch trash in the area near your part of the street. All trash can be placed in black trash bags and dropped off at 415 Spencer Rd (by the stone wall near the fire hydrant) on May 15th. No household or personal garbage should be dropped off, only collected street garbage.

Please take proper safety precautions.

  • Bring work gloves if you have them
  • You will need to provide your own garbage bag this year
  • Reflective safety vests available for borrow (contact neighbor Jean – see email on Spencer Rd mailing list for details)

Thank you for doing your part to keep our neighborhood clean and beautiful!

Upcoming Meetings

All upcoming meetings of the Spencer Road Neighborhood Association have been canceled until further notice. We look forward to meeting again once the current health crisis improves.

Our neighborhood meetings are opportunities to discuss topics of interest with the rest of the community.

When we are able to resume, meetings are held on the second Sunday of the month from 10am-11:30am at the Tompkins Community Action building at 701 Spencer Road.
