Please join us on Saturday, May 14th at 10 A.M. (rain date: Sunday, May 15th at 10 A.M.) to pick up trash along our neighborhood streets and sidewalks.
Trash bags will be available at 410 Spencer Road for use. Filled bags can be dropped off in the 400 block at the sign posted. Please collect only road-side debris; don’t include your household trash or garbage.
Come join your neighbors as we work to make this a better community for us all!
Many thanks to all those who helped with the clean-up of our neighborhood last weekend. Because of our work, our community looks better than it has since before the pandemic started. As things return to normal, we will again plan on having our clean-up events twice a year in the hope that we can maintain the progress we made today.
Special thanks are due to the members of the Ithaca Police Department who helped out last Saturday, many after working the night shift. Your efforts in gathering and hauling away two years’ work of debris were much appreciated!
Thanks also to our Common Council representatives, George McGonigal and Cynthia Brock. Your trash collection skills and continuing support of our neighborhood mean a lot.
For those who were unable to participate, you will have another chance in the Fall. We will hope to see you then.
There have been some recent gun-related incidents on Spencer Road, including two instances of a gun found along the road, and three reports in the last few months of gunshots being fired. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported in any of these instances.
In response to concerns about the increasing frequency of gun-related activity, the Spencer Road Neighborhood Association will be holding an online neighborhood meeting on Zoom at 7:00pm on Thursday, May 6th. We have invited our neighborhood’s common council representatives, a representative from the Ithaca Police Department, and other members of the community to join the conversation to discuss our concerns and share strategies about how we can move forward as a neighborhood community, including precautions we can take to reduce these incidents and ensure the safety of our neighbors.
We hope you will join us in this conversation. Please register for the meeting. When you register, you will receive an email with instructions on how to join the Zoom session on the 6th, either online or by phone. If you have questions about how to join, please email us at SpencerRoadIthaca@gmail.com.
In the past, we would do our neighborhood clean up in small groups, but due to social distancing, this year’s clean up will be done as an “on your own” event on May 15th. Please gather any street, curb, and ditch trash in the area near your part of the street. All trash can be placed in black trash bags and dropped off at 415 Spencer Rd (by the stone wall near the fire hydrant) on May 15th. No household or personal garbage should be dropped off, only collected street garbage.
Please take proper safety precautions.
Bring work gloves if you have them
You will need to provide your own garbage bag this year
Reflective safety vests available for borrow (contact neighbor Jean – see email on Spencer Rd mailing list for details)
Thank you for doing your part to keep our neighborhood clean and beautiful!
We will be having our Fall Road Clean Up Saturday, September 14th. We will meet at the Spencer Road/South Meadow Street Extension intersection at 10:00am. Please bring gloves if you have them. Bags will be provided. The rain date is Sunday, September 15th.
Our monthly neighborhood meeting will be this Sunday, August 11, at 10 AM in the community room of Tompkins Community Action (TCA) at the Buttermilk Falls end of the street (701 Spencer Road). Please enter through the door in the rear of the building off of the parking lot (to reach the door, after you turn into TCA, take the driveway on the right to reach the parking lot at the rear).
We’ll have coffee, iced tea, and some goodies. Hope to see you then.
The 300 block of Spencer Road (from the traffic circle to the Stone Quarry Rd intersection) is going to undergo repaving. Work is scheduled to start August 2nd. After Aurora St reopens (on or after August 15th), this section of Spencer Road will be closed (with traffic detoured to Aurora St on South Hill) until the work is completed.
PROJECT LOCATION: Spencer Road – From the Traffic Circle to Stone Quarry Road
PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND GOAL: Mill existing road surface and prepare for asphalt overlay.

RECOMMENDED DETOURS IN PLACE: Traffic controlled by flaggers for the duration of the milling of the road. South Aurora Street will serve as a detour route while Spencer Road is re-paved.
ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE: August 30, 2019

Based on these open house meetings, the Department will then develop a final proposed work plan and budget and these will be presented to the Board of Public Works. The budgets for each SID can then be translated into the Mayor’s proposed budget and Common Council will have the opportunity to review each SID work plan through their normal budget review process this fall. Projects that are not included in the 2020 work plan will be considered for 2021.
Questions about undertaking sidewalk work can be directed to the Engineering Office (607) 274-6534. The proposed 2020 Work Plan will be posted to the City’s website after the first meeting. Written comments will also be accepted through July 16, 2019 via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
